As Water with Waters
“Petition from Pain”
“As rock with rock, as water with waters. As these written things do not feel pain, so also may I not, and the air of grievance be released my soul.”
This quote, along with pages from my sister-in-law’s 1977 baby book begin the commemorative installation. She passed away in 2019 and since her passing I have envisioned a project that pays homage to her life. The installation consists of reprinted pages from her baby book that form a central nest. The nest holds a book consisting of poems and writing from her family. Ultimately, the work reflects on memory, loss, and grief, and the human need to find hope in hardship.
"Petition from Pain" was written by Cian Cashin. Chaya's brother and my husband.
